4. Plug in the new SSD/HDD into that. 5. Make sure any electric battery is fully billed (if a portable device) and the Mac is connected to power supply (i.e. a charger for a portable device). Disk Utility to initialize the new SSD/HDD. Usually, the MAC OS will alert you to do so, with a dialogue package. Disk Utility to erase the whole new disk.

Be careful to choose the correct drive. Label the new drive with a label like “Macintosh New”, “Macintosh HDD New” or “Macintosh SSD New”. Something that can distinguish it from the original Mac disk easily. 8. Now run SuperDuper! Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the ‘Macintosh Old’ to new partition ‘Macintosh New’. WARNING Make sure you name or rename the drives (really Mac ‘drives’ are partitions) in order to be recognized without error. Cloning the Mac OSX partition using SuperDuper!

9. Either set the startup drive to ‘Macintosh New’ then Reboot to the recently copied Mac partition. Or optionally you can just contain the option key at reboot and choose the recently cloned Mac OS drive on top of that from. Note “Time Required” depends on the choice of Path 1 or 2 2 and also on the utilization of SSD/HDD and on the size of the drives used and the info being cloned.

You can of course also use a Thunderbolt to eSATA and/or USB 3.0 Adapter that can also speed this process up. These devices are costly and should not be bought simply for this task usually, but for the goal of ongoing use, to increase USB access on an older Mac for example. Or simply for this technicians attempting to speed up the procedure on multiple Mac’s over time. If anyone has specific experience with these adapters please post a comment.

B. Re-create the Recovery Partition on the new drive. UNLESS YOU DO THIS STEP NOW BEFORE YOU CREATE A NEW BOOTCAMP PARTITION YOU THEN COULD HAVE PROBLEMS LATER! In the event that you used Carbon Copy Cloner it may have created a new Recovery partition already. If you used SuperDuper! 1. You’ll need a copy of the Mac OSX install documents (.APP, .ISO or .DMG) from which to remove the recovery partition.

You can download one from Apple here. NOTE: If you are about to update the OS (THIS IS A GREAT TIME) then choose the newer image. By default, Apple has changed the security settings to only allow installing applications from the Mac App Store and identified developers. To bypass the mistake message temporarily, control-click the application form and choose Open. Click the Open button in the caution dialogue that shows up. Security & Privacy. On the General Tab click on the little secure the lower still left corner to unlock the General choice pane. Then select the Anywhere radio button beneath Allow applications downloaded from. 4. Run the Recovery Partition Creator and point it at the OSX image document you downloaded.

When you get to the check out option, be sure you do run the scan option (DO NOT SKIP) as I’ve noticed the utility does not work sometimes if you don’t. 5. Reboot the Mac and select the brand new Mac OSX. NOTE: Confirmation of the new Recovery Partition is achieved when (should) spot the new recovery partition (or at least two of them) when you reboot and hold the option key to pick from the shoe drives available. Select the NEW Mac OSX or if you want you could first test the Recovery Partition works.

Bootcamp Assistant to re-partition the hard drive for Windows. You probably already have a Windows DVD install disk and find out about this requirement having already installed (I assume) a Windows Bootcamp partition before. 1. Reboot the Mac and select the brand new Mac OSX. 2. NOTE: If you took Procedure A – Path 1 then you will need to plug within an external USB DVD drive. Otherwise, place your Windows 7/8 install drive (a required step to allow Bootcamp to perform).

3. Make your Windows DVD install disk and the DVD drive (if required) that matches one of the Windows OS version that Bootcamp desires to use to install the new Windows partition. Note: Generally only a 64-little bit edition of Windows is supported. Mac OSX (this can be a good time to do so), then you may be able to use a USB drive with the Windows image on it optionally. Bootcamp will off to produce the USB boot stick from an ISO file. Bootcamp utility to setup the new Windows partition and start the install. Because you are migrating rather than setting up Windows you can deselect the first option to download drivers.

5. To speed up this process be sure you deselect the “download the latest Windows support software from Apple” option. 6. Be sure to choose the NEW drive before proceeding to generate the new BOOTCAMP partition. CRITICAL DECISION POINT: Be careful in making your decision on the sizes of the Mac and Windows partitions.
